The Chow origin is not exactly known but the breed is easily recognizable in Chinese sculptures and pottery dating back to 206 B.C. to 22 A.D. Some people believe that the Chow's ancestors were the Norwegian Elkhound, Pomeranian and Keeshond.
Some also believed that the Chow originated in Tibet and was raised as a food source for human consumption similar to sheep and cattle. If this is correct it may explain why their tooth and mouth structure is different than most breeds. The Chow's teeth are shorter and flatter than the carnivorous canines with sharp incisors due to the fact that they would have been fed only grains and vegetables.
The Chow is an all purpose dog that has been used in hunting, herding, and home protection. They are a muscular, powerful and sturdy breed that now primarily serve as family companions.
The Chow is devoted to its family and is weary of strangers making them good guard dogs. They tend to possess "cat like" personalities being independent, stubborn and less eager to please than other breeds of dogs.
Due to their thick double coats the Chow requires quite a bit of grooming and bathing to keep their coats healthy.
The native food sources for the Chow would have contained wheat, soy, rice and fish. The recommended food for the Chow would contain a blend of their native foods. Foods containing beef, lamb, horse, and poultry should be avoided for this breed.*
