English Setter
Nutritional Requirements

English SetterThe English Setter is one of the oldest gun dog breeds around today and was originally developed in England over 400 years ago. It was believed that the English Setter was developed from Spaniel bloodlines and was originally called the Setting Spaniel. Before guns were widely used in hunting the English Setter would find the birds and then "set" or crouch down on its front legs allowing the hunters to approach and throw nets over the game. When guns became used more and more the English Setter developed a more upright pointing stance as to be seen be the hunter easier.

The English Setter is a very gentle friendly dog that is also good with children. They are affectionate and mild mannered making an excellent family companion and an even better companion for the enthusiastic hunter.

The English Setter needs regular daily exercise for optimal care. Due to their coat, regular grooming is required. They should be bathed when needed and regularly brushed to keep their coat healthy and free of mats. The English Setter is and average shedding dog.

The native food sources for the English Setter would have included poultry, of the game bird variety, beef, wheat and brown rice.

The recommended foods for the English Setter would contain a blend of foods that are high in carbohydrates to protein ratios as well as high in fiber. They should contain food sources such as lamb, poultry, wheat, yellow corn and brown rice. Foods containing soy, white rice, and fish should be avoided.*

As for the English Setter and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved English Setter needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
