Golden Retriever
Nutritional Requirements

Golden RetrieverThe Golden Retriever was bred in Scotland in the 1800s, from the only light-colored puppy in a litter of black retrievers. It was crossed with a Tweed Water Spaniel. Retrievers were bred as hunting dogs and especially to retrieve birds that had fallen far away or into water after being shot.

Golden Retrievers are well known for their amiable temperament that makes them a good family pet, especially where there are small children. They are also friendly to strangers, so are quite useless as guard dogs.

While they do need lots of exercise, they are often inclined to sit around or doze the day away. So must be encouraged to exercise. Golden retrievers have short to medium length hair that is shed constantly, so need frequent grooming.

All dogs are carnivores and in the wild would eat raw meat from their own kills - including skin and bones. If dogs are fed a diet that is not natural they will not be as healthy.

The Golden Retriever’s native food source would have included wild game and waterfowl along with the available farm crops of oats and barley.

The recommended diet for the Golden Receiver would then include chicken or poultry type meats, barley and oats. If buying processed foods stay away from soy, peanut hulls and sugar - including sucrose and fructose. Meat should be one of the first ingredients listed.*

As for the Golden Retriever and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Golden Retriever needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
