The Great Pyrenees or Pyrenean Mountain Dog is rather like an overgrown Labrador to look at; it is of course, a much bigger and heavier breed with a thicker coat. Originally from the Pyrenees Mountains region in southern France and nearby Spain, this breed was kept especially to guard flocks of sheep and goats from predators such as eagles and wolves. They will also protect chickens, llamas and horses.
The Great Pyrenees is serious and steady by nature, not so inclined to be playful like the Labrador. They are content with minimal exercise, which makes them an ideal indoor pet. However, they do need to be socialized early in life if they are to become friendly towards their human family. Otherwise they will remain aloof and may even be aggressive, especially towards strangers.
The Great Pyrenees has a thick coat that sheds a great deal. It also means that hot climates are not suitable for this breed and their habit of barking at every noise may mean problems in suburbia. If left alone indoors the Great Pyrenees can be quite destructive from sheer boredom.
Lamb, potato, wheat and chicken with a high fat content would have been the diet fed to the original breed, so for optimum health this should be adhered to. Beef, soy products, beet pulp and yellow corn should be avoided.*
As for the Great Pyrenees and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Great Pyrenees needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
