The fastest dog of all time is the Greyhound, which can run at speeds of around 70 kilometers per hour. A slim-bodied dog with a deep chest and powerful legs, the Greyhound has the largest heart of any dog breed breed.
Its origins are steeped in antiquity; pictures being found on Egyptian hieroglyphs as a dog of the Pharaohs. Today they are kept for racing, but while they love to sprint, their energy needs are not excessive and they are quiet and placid as a family pet.
The fact that Greyhounds rarely bark and are friendly to all means they are not much use as guard dogs. They have absolutely no traffic sense and their trait of chasing anything at full speed means they should be kept on a leash when out walking. They can also jump over fences quite easily, so their yard fence needs to be at least 6 feet high.
Greyhounds have sensitive skin, so tick or flea collars must be pyrethrum-based. Their protein to fat requirements are low when compared to many other breeds. Fat should come from a vegetable source rather than animal.
Their original diet would have been goat, pork, rabbit and poultry, with the addition of figs, grapes, barley and wheat.
Chicken, barley and lamb are suitable for Greyhounds while beef, soy, yellow corn and beet products should be avoided.*
As for the Greyhound and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Greyhound needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
