The Irish Water Spaniel should not be confused with the Irish Setter. The spaniel has a most distinctive coat that is curly and thick, a mousy tail and a goatee-type beard.
While the breed was developed in Ireland, it probably originated from breeds found on the Iberian Peninsula and Portuguese water dog.
The breed is known for its boisterous activity and needs lots of space and outdoors activity to keep it healthy and happy. The coat does not shed loose hair so this must be removed by frequent and thorough grooming. Facial hair needs to be trimmed regularly, as do the toenails. In fact, experts agree that the whole coat can be clipped at regular intervals to overcome the problem of matting.
Irish Water Spaniels are a determined, strong breed that, while capable of protecting children has a tendency to be inquisitive and a ‘runner’. It is best suited to an active, older family.
Food supplies for the animal in its native habitat are likely to have been fish, fowl, potato and grain such as rye, oats and flax.
Therefore to feed the Irish Water Spaniel a diet that suits its digestive system a diet high in carbohydrates, fish and chicken would be the choice. Beef, horsemeat, white rice, avocado and soy should be avoided.*
As for the Irish Water Spaniel and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Irish Water Spaniel needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
