The cute little Jack Russell Terrier is a relative newcomer on the doggy scene. The Reverend Jack Russell bred this small dog in England in the late 1800s to hunt badger, foxes, rats and other small game. He wanted a dog that was small enough - and keen enough - to go into tunnels after prey without getting stuck.
Though the Jack Russell Terrier has the typical body and size of a terrier, it can have either a smooth or rough coat with various markings, giving each animal its own distinctive look. They have high energy and require lots of training to make them obedient. Even then it often seems they are only obedient when it suits them. Because of their activity levels they are not suited for apartment dwellers.
The Jack Russell Terrier is fearless when it comes to fighting other dogs, even those much bigger. But they are friendly and playful around children. They should be disciplined and kept active though, because a bored dog can become destructive and nippy.
The Jack Russell Terrier's native food would have derived from the game they hunted and from the crops of cereal such as oats and wheat along with some vegetables that were grown at the time. Today their diet should include meat such as horsemeat or beef, vegetables and some cereals. Avoid white rice, soy and fish.*
As for the Jack Russell Terrier and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Jack Russell Terrier needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
