The Miniature Pinscher or Min Pin as it is often referred to, originally came from Germany where it was bred as a sturdy, small terrier to hunt vermin. Today’s dog is much more refined in looks than its forebears, being bred to have a more slender appearance and slightly longer legs. It is classed as a toy now, rather than a terrier.
Although tiny - not bigger than 12 inches - the Miniature Pinscher is not suited to life in an apartment due to its high energy levels. It needs a great deal of exercise and should be allowed to run free if safe to do so.
While the breed is often found to bond with just one or two people, it can be a family pet if care is taken to integrate it properly. Young children should be trained how to handle puppies with care as they can be easily injured with rough handling.
Like many small dogs they will throw out a challenge to anything they deem a threat and their barking is often a nuisance, but this makes them good guard dogs. Grooming is minimal and the short coat means that they tend to feel the cold a great deal. Their instinct to hunt small prey is so strong that they can be in danger of choking on small objects such as bottle caps that they attack.
In their native home this breed would have been fed on vermin such as rats and mice, pork and venison with vegetables such as cabbages, sugar beet and potatoes. A recommended diet for today would be a blend of pork and beef, yellow corn, wheat, beet pulp and potatoes. Avoid foods containing fish, soy, or rice.*
As for the Miniature Pinscher and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Miniature Pinscher needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
