A giant amongst dog breeds, the Newfoundland comes from Canada where it was bred to help with hauling in fishing nets and pulling sledges and carts way back in the 17th century. The breed made its way to England in the 18th century and has been used to rescue people trapped in the snow as well as taking lines to ships in distress. It is one of the few dog breeds that have webbed feet to help it swim.
This huge dog is gentle and placid, loyal and courageous and loves interacting with people. It has a great deal of patience with children, but due to its huge size it should not be left unsupervised with very little children.
The Newfoundland should be groomed for at least an hour a week with a stiff brush because the oily, dense coat collects dust and tends to matt and tangle if not brushed. The adult dog is usually too big to bath. Puppies should be exercised only lightly as too much will strain their growing bones.
In its native environment the Newfoundland would have been fed on such things as whale meat, fish and caribou - similar to horsemeat; and bear-meat that is similar to pork. In fact the breed has a high requirement for the fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamin A, D and E. When taken in from vegetables these vitamins are not assimilated properly. The source should be from meat.
Fish, lamb, pork and poultry are suitable for the diet of the Newfoundland and it should be high in fat. Avoid foods containing beef, soy products, and anything with high fiber originating for wood pulp, oats or beets.*
As for the Newfoundland and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Newfoundland needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
