The Pointer has the amazing ability to find game, but stop before it is flushed out of hiding. It freezes - often with one front paw held off the ground - with its muzzle pointing towards the hidden game until the hunter arrives at the spot.
Those who hunted game with nets originally bred the Pointer, so they could net - or later, shoot - the prey before it escaped. This was the opposite of dogs who were used to flush game for those who hunted with falcons.
It is not certain where pointers came from originally, but experts point to Spain. However, it is known that by the 16th century they were in Europe and England, helping their masters find game. They are intelligent, sensitive dogs that are extremely loyal to their owners and respond well to being scolded.
The Pointer also has high-energy needs and constantly desires to track and hunt, making them unsuitable companions for the elderly or very young children.
They need minimal grooming and their fine short hair sheds constantly. Since their hair offers little protection, they need soft bedding to save joints becoming calloused.
In their native habitat Pointers would have been fed on various types of wild birds, goat, pork, fish and brown rice. Even though the breed has been fed on beef and potatoes since arriving in England, they still do better if the former diet is adhered to as closely as possible. This means that foods containing fish, poultry and brown rice are much more suitable than beef, soy products, beet and horsemeat, which should be avoided.*
As for the Pointer and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Pointer needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
