Pomeranian
Nutritional Requirements

Pomeranian DogIt is hard to believe that the tiny Pomeranian descended from a herding dog that was quite large, but it did. It was crossed with dogs that were much smaller, of course - in particular a small Icelandic breed referred to as the Spits dog. The result of numerous crosses was the Pomeranian, called after the ancient Russian province Pomerania, where the breeding took place.

The soft, fluffy fur of the Pomeranian requires meticulous grooming to keep it from matting and tangles. They are good at socializing with other animals and humans. Their extremely intelligent and eager to please nature makes them easy to train. While they are often used as a lap dog, their long coat makes them hot and they often seek cooler places such as tiles, to rest on.

Pomeranians adapt to nearly any situation as far as living conditions are concerned. They don’t like excessive handling and are better off if their human family members are over 3 years old.

Beef cattle, pork and fish are the staple meats of the Pomeranians original environment. Such cereals and vegetables as barley, wheat, rye, oats and sugar beets were also grown there and would have been added to its diet. So these are the foods that will best supply the nutritional need of this breed. Lamb, soy, rice and poultry are best avoided.*

As for the Pomeranian and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Pomeranian needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
