Most people think of Poodles as elegant show dogs but they were actually bred as hunting and herding animals. Originally bred as a water dog, the breeds’ name originated from the German pudelhund - pudel reflecting the English word puddle and pointing to the breed’s original use. The Poodle is considered to be one of the most intelligent of all dog breeds.
The Poodle’s hair is a single, curly coat that rarely sheds, making them suitable as pets for allergy sufferers. However, they do require grooming and if shown in the ring this will take an excessive amount of time, along with the specific clipping styles that are popular for exhibition dogs.
Three main sizes are recognized for Poodles; toy, miniature and standard. Some countries add another size; that of medium.
The standard Poodle requires a diet high in protein with lots of the amino acid Phenylalanine, and plenty of minerals if the coat is to retain its sheen and other health problems such as loose teeth, avoided.
Since the Poodle originated from Germany its diet would most likely have included venison, pork, poultry, fish, cabbage, potato, corn and wheat. Therefore foods containing some or most of these ingredients would be suitable for its diet today. Foods such as beef and horsemeat, beet pulp, soy or avocado should be avoided.*
As for the Poodle and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Poodle needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
