Originally the Pug called Tibet home. The breed is known for its almost flat face and square, stubby body. The bottom teeth tend to jut out further than the top, all part of the breed’s unique serious look. However, the breed is actually renowned for its sense of fun and clownish antics.
Being a sociable animal, the Pug gets on well with family and other animals alike, and may become somewhat agitated if no attention is lavished upon it. It is sensitive to the human voice and thus easier to train and discipline than many other small breeds.
Due to its short snout, the Pug may have problems in breathing and thus in cooling itself with panting. It is more suited to a cool climate for this reason. The short snout is also the cause of the reverse sneeze that pugs are often seen to perform when excited. Pugs don’t require much exercise, but are prone to obesity if not walked on a regular basis.
The mountainous regions of its original country provide a unique environment that would affect what is grown there. The Pugs’ diet would have consisted of yak, goat, boar, horse, deer and rodent meats.
The high fat diet required by the Pug breed means that it should be fed on meats similar to these. A blend of pork and beef is suitable where horsemeat cannot be obtained. Wheat, rice and barley are the most suitable grains. Lamb, poultry, ocean fish and yellow corn should be avoided.*
As for the Pug and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Pug needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
