Schnauzer
Nutritional Requirements

Schnauzer DogThe origin of the Schnauzer breed is not only steeped in antiquity, but in mystery too. There are several schools of thought on where and from what it originally descended.

Some say it goes right back to the Middle Ages where it was bred from the now extinct Beaver Dog and some kind of terrier. Others think it is a descendent of German dogs that are now extinct. Whatever the truth of the matter, the Schnauzer bears a close resemblance to a dog called the Bouvier des Flandres that is now no longer in existence.

The Schnauzer is a robust breed that is playful and active and considered to be good with children, but requires a great deal of exercise, so an active family would probably be best for it.

The Schnauzer's wiry coat needs to be stripped and plucked, but if kept for showing should not be clipped. The facial hair and whickers give its face the classic square look.

The Schnauzer is a dominant type and so training should be given to ensure it accepts family members as leaders of the pack, rather than itself.

The best diet for a Schnauzer is ‘real’ food; that which you buy fresh from the supermarket and prepare yourself. It would include turkey, beef and chicken along with fresh raw fruit and vegetables, eggs, cheese and yogurt, oatmeal and brown rice. Foods to avoid would be fish, soy and white rice. *

As for the Schnauzer and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Schnauzer needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
