Medium to large in size, the Siberian Husky’s origins in the harsh climate of Siberia - or more specifically North-Eastern Asia - ensured that it developed in such a way as to cope admirably with those conditions. Its thick, dense, double coat makes it eminently suitable for life in all cold countries.
Initially used as a sled dog, the Siberian Husky is mainly kept for show and racing these days and is popular for its intelligence.
The Siberian Husky does show traits of its forebears in that it howls like a wolf rather than barking, and likes to run as they have been bred to do. This means that an unwary owner can find his Siberian Husky is miles away before he even realizes it has gone. Daily obedience training will help this dominant breed remain where it should be.
An unusual feature of this breed is the eye color that can be different for each eye. Some show complete color difference with one eye blue and the other brown. Others have a blue/brown mixture in each eye.
The Siberian Husky’s native diet was that of fish such as salmon and other types, otter and mink. All these have high fats and that is what the Siberian husky must have also. Fish and poultry suit its needs, with three fatty acids - linolenic, linoleum and oleic - in the proper balance for optimum health. Foods to avoid would be horsemeat and beef, beet products, soy and yellow corn.*
As for the Siberian Husky and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Siberian Husky needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
