An enormous dog, the St Bernard was bred in the Swiss Alps specifically for rescue work. They are connected to Sennenhunds, also called Swiss Mountain Dogs, that were used as farm dogs in herding, hunting, guarding and other important tasks.
The St Bernard has a short, dense coat that is can be smooth or rough and it usually forms a ruff around the neck, reminiscent of the lion. The legs are covered with hair that is longer than usual for most dogs, giving it warmer protection in snow.
Not used so much for rescue work these day, the St Bernard can be found pulling carts and weights specifically for sporting activities. The breed grows very quickly and the diet must be highly nutritious to support bone and muscle health.
While not aggressive, their size means that they must be trained well and taught to socialize properly with their human family, otherwise they will not be able to distinguish small children from small game.
Because this breed originates from a cold country, it does not tolerate heat very well and should never be exercised in the heat of the day.
Grooming is minimal, with the rough-coated dog needing ten minutes brushing daily to ensure matting is no problem.
Their native food would have been goat, mutton, dairy, wheat and low ground vegetables. Lamb, wheat and potato are foods that would suit the St Bernard these days. Horsemeat, beef, yellow corn, white rice and soy products are best avoided.*
As for the St Bernard and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved St Bernard needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
