Weimaranar
Nutritional Requirements

Weimaranar DogThis breed was originally called the Weimaranar Pointer in its country of origin; Germany. There it was bred and trained to be a hunter with traits of pointing to game as well as hunting native animals such as mountain lions, wolves, wildcats and bear. Unfortunately these animals eventually became rare or extinct and so the Weimaraner became a bird dog that could retrieve game without breaking the skin with its teeth. This trait is called having a soft mouth.

The name of this breed comes from the town Weimer in Germany, a fertile area with unique mineral content in the soil. This has led to certain dietary requirements for the Weimaraner. The Weimaranar's native foods would have been deer, pork, goat, beef and poultry. Added to this were vegetables such as potato and cabbage with rye and barley as the grains.

The Weimaraner has a gentle temperament that makes it popular with families, but children are not tolerated as well, unless the breed is trained right from a young age to accept them. Then it will become a faithful and loving companion. They respond well to training that is based on rewards. Grooming and shedding is minimal, but energy requirements are high, making it more suited to an active family.

Foods high in animal fats such as lamb and poultry are suitable for the Weimaraner with potato, wheat and barley in that order of importance. Avoid ocean fish, soy, white rice and beet products.*

As for the Weimaranar and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Weimaranar needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
