 The Welsh Corgi is a small dog with very short legs. It was bred in Wales to help with herding; in particular heeling cattle. That means it was trained to nip at the heels of cattle to hurry them along. And its short stature meant that it was out of range of kicking hooves. There are two types of Welsh corgi; the Pembroke and the Cardigan - both named for the area in which they were bred.
The Pembroke is the best-known breed of Welsh Corgi, but the Cardigan is the bigger of the two and still used as a herding dog in Wales. It has a fox like tail and large, rounded ears. Bred to nip at tails and hooves, it is not recommended as a pet for children. The Pembroke is less apt to nip at heels but is still not considered to be a good pet for children. The Pembroke Corgi’s ears are much more pointed than the Cardigan, and its tail quite short. Both breeds are extremely hardy and long-lived.
The original environment of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi was coastal, known for mining and seaport activities, but the soil and climate does not support growing crops or farming.
The diet of the Pembroke Corgi reflects this in that its mineral needs are quite high compared to many other breeds. Calcium, iodine and phosphorus given to the Pembroke should be from a coastal source. Fish, lamb, poultry, potatoes, ground crops and barley are all suitable. Horsemeat, beef, soy, citrus and avocado should be avoided.
The Cardigan Welsh corgi can eat small amounts of beef with its fish, plus rye, oats and yellow corn. But stay away from white rice, beet pulp and soy.*
