Whippet DogWhile the Whippet as we know it today comes from the British Isles, originally its forebears are thought to have come from Italy or Northern Africa. And even after twenty odd centuries, its thin coat has not adapted to the cold country it was brought to by invading Roman legions, but is much more suited to hot, dry climates.

The whippet is a lean and muscular dog descended from the Greyhound. Its coat is short and its tail long and thin. It is a racer and this trait makes it want to run and chase whenever it gets the chance. Added to this it has absolutely no road sense so must be leashed at all times unless in the country with no traffic. Apart from this it is gentle and sensitive breed, so makes a good family pet.

Grooming is minimal; a damp cloth wiped over the coat is sufficient. Care must be taken to keep the Whippet warm in winter and protect it from sunburn in hot summers. The slender bones can be broken easily, so rough play should be avoided.

The Whippet’s native diet would have consisted of hare, rabbit, goat, poultry mutton, corn and wheat, so these are the kinds of food most suited to it today. Avoid ocean fish, horsemeat or beef and soy products. The addition of linseed oil to its diet will make for a healthy coat.*

As for the Whippet and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Whippet needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
