The German Shorthaired Pointers origin is not known but the source seems to be derived from what is today’s Turkey. The breed is believed to be derived from the German bird dog, Spanish Pointer and local hounds.
The German Shorthaired Pointer is a well balanced, versatile all purpose hunting dog that is acclaimed for it's keen ability for tracking scents and intelligence. The German Shorthaired Pointer is proficient with many types of game, but is widely used as a bird dog.
The German Shorthaired Pointer is an intelligent, even tempered dog that is a loyal family companion. They are cheerful and child friendly making them an ideal dog for hunting and family.
They are a very active dog that needs regular exercise and are recommended for very active families.
Due to their short coat, grooming is minimal although a regular bathing is recommended.
Their native food sources would have consisted of poultry, fish, goat, fig, olive and grape. Grains would have included wheat, brown rice and barley.
The recommended food source for the German Shorthaired Pointer would contain a blend of lamb, fish, poultry, and wheat. Foods containing beef byproducts, corn, beets and soy should be avoided.*
