The Great Dane is one of the largest dog breeds. Originally bred in Germany for both hunting and guard duties, the first Great Danes were extremely ferocious. During times of war, these dogs were used to transport gear and protect their master as he fought on the battlefield.
These days that vicious trait that was so necessary is missing, making the Great Dane a loving and gentle giant in the world of pets. However, they will still bark at strangers so have some use as a watchdog.
Great Danes don’t shed much and their short hair means grooming is minimal. However, they do drool over everything. If kept in suburbia they require at least 30 minutes of walking per day.
Because they are so big, the fence of their yard should be at least 5 feet high. Obedience training is necessary with such a large dog.
In its native environment the Great Dane was fed a diet high in fiber, with cabbage and whole oats and rye as a big percentage. Meats included both lean beef from dairy cattle, and wild game such as venison and boar.
When fed a high fiber diet similar to this with beef, vegetables and oats the Great Dane does not suffer from bloat or torsion nearly as much. Bone strength is important so protein and calcium is a must especially in the growth stage. White rice, soy and fish should be avoided in its diet.*
As for the Great Dane and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Great Dane needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
