Charming and popular, the Miniature Schnauzer has been in existence since the 15th century in Germany where it was bred down from larger animals as a hunter of vermin and also used to guard farms and small livestock.
The facial whiskers and leg hair give it a distinctive appearance to go with its personality. This breed is one of the rare non-shedders, making it an ideal indoors pet and great for allergy sufferers too. However the hair will grow up to 2 inches if not kept clipped and is prone to tangles and matting, so grooming is a must.
Unlike some small breeds the Miniature Schnauzer is not aggressive, nor is it excessively timid, though it may remain aloof with strangers until introduced. They don’t bark incessantly at nothing, but they certainly bark at strangers, the adults of the breed being quite territorial. They are intelligent and eager to please, making them fairly easy to train.
In its homeland, the Miniature Schnauzer would have been fed on a variety of vegetables such as cabbage, potatoes and beet pulp with wheat for cereal. Beef and rodent flesh would have been a big part of its daily diet.
The correct food for this breed would be along similar lines, with a pork/beef blend added to potatoes, beet pulp and wheat. Avoid such foods as soy products, ocean fish, avocado and rice. Their diet should be low fat as they are prone to diabetes and bladder stones.*
As for the Miniature Schnauzer and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Miniature Schnauzer needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
