Originating from China, the Pekingese is a royal palace dog, as only members of royalty were allowed to own one. They were called variously, Lion Dog due to their appearance, Sleeve Dog because they could be kept in a wide sleeve, and Sun Dog.
It was only after the invasion of the Peking palace by British troops in the 18th century that these little dogs became known to the western world. The five that were found guarding their mistress’s body became captives of war and were sent to Britain where they became the forefathers of all Pekingese.
The main features of the Pekingese breed are its flat face and short, bowed legs that prevent it from taking too much exercise. They can be shorthaired or longhaired and if bred for showing the longhaired variety is preferred, with hair left unclipped. Good grooming is essential to prevent tangling - brushing once a day is not too much.
They make affectionate pets though must be kept in line with good doggy discipline or will try to become a leader of its human pack. This will lead to negative behaviors that are difficult to deal with.
In their native environment the Pekingese would have dined on Chinese foods such as fish, rice, pork, beets and soy products, greens and poultry. These days the Pekingese breed should be fed on such things as blended poultry, yellow corn, rice, soy and beet products. Foods to avoid would be beef and horsemeat, potatoes, oats and avocado.*
As for the Pekingese and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Pekingese needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
