The Shar Pei is a stocky, mid-sized breed originating from China. They were using for guard dogs and for dog fighting. This caused a tendency to be aggressive, stubborn and want to dominate their human pack. However, if the parents are placid, then the puppies are likely to inherit that trait. The breed will often be aloof or unfriendly to other dogs, but is friendly to its human family.
Adolescents are the ones who show most skin wrinkles, but this eventually recedes as the dog grows into its skin. Wrinkles will remain about the head and shoulders to some extent and must be watched for skin diseases such as dermatitis. This can be aggravated by a high-protein diet.
Grooming is extremely low maintenance; wiping down at random times with a mitt being sufficient. The Shar Pei tends to drool a great deal.
To prevent allergies in this breed it is best to avoid such foods as soy, gluten and sugar, corn and wheat - and in fact the Shar Pei should have a diet that is completely grain-free and low-fiber. Lamb, fats and vegetables or a commercial blend of these ingredients may be the best diet. Beef, pork, chicken and turkey bones should be avoided. Elevating the food and water bowls will help to prevent choking problems caused by the short neck.*
As for the Shar Pei and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Shar Pei needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
