Springer Spaniel
Nutritional Requirements

Springer Spaniel DogThe Springer Spaniel is an English breed that was used extensively as a gun dog that both flushed game from the undergrowth and retrieved it once shot.

It is an ancient breed and the forerunner of most spaniel breeds. The breed is known for its friendly and eager to please manner, traits which makes it an ideal family pet. Both its biddable temperament and intelligence make it an easy dog to train and deal with.

The Springer Spaniel bred for show and one bred for fieldwork appear to be two different animals. The show spaniel is bigger, with more pendulous ears and a longer coat. Its tail is usually docked if allowed in the country where it lives.

The field bred Springer Spaniel is a shorter, sturdier dog with a shorter coat. Its tail is usually only docked slightly to save it from being hurt during the hunt. A longer tail is needed so that the hunter can see it in its hunting environment of thick undergrowth.

The original diet of the Springer Spaniel would have been poultry, wildfowl and small game of other kinds. Fresh foods such as chicken and turkey, beef, eggs, cheese, yogurt, brown rice and oatmeal will see the Springer Spaniel retain optimum health. Rice, yellow corn, pork and fish should be avoided.*

As for the Springer Spaniel and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Springer Spaniel needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
