The Yorkshire Terrier was developed in Yorkshire, England in the 1800s. It is a toy breed no bigger than around 7 ½ inches high, much loved for its long silky hair and blue/tan coloring as well as the endearing looks and sociable nature. It makes an ideal family pet and in spite of its tiny size it acts as if it is a big and rather important dog.
Yorkie puppies are so inquisitive that a small mesh playpen is needed so that they don’t have to be watched every second of the day. They are tiny enough to fit in a teacup, hence the name teacup terriers.
The Yorkshire Terrier's coat only sheds when brushed and the different make-up of the Yorkies’ hair means that some allergy sufferers are able to tolerate it as a pet. Unless kept for showing, the coat may be clipped to make grooming easier. It needs to be brushed every day and the dog should be bathed monthly. Most Yorkie puppies a black with tan points. Their coat grows out slowly over some years and reverts to the silver/blue coloring.
The Yorkshire Terrier of ancient days was a heavier, stronger dog - about twice the size of those found today. It was used for vermin control. Its native diet would have been rats and mice, meat from dairy cattle, potatoes, sugar beet, barley and wheat. Horse and beef meats can also be given to today’s Yorkies. Red fish, e.g. salmon, soy and yellow corn should be avoided.*
As for the Yorkshire Terrier and most breeds of dogs it is highly recommended that a quality dog vitamin supplement be added as a regular part of their daily nutrition as dog foods alone cannot provide all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition that your beloved Yorkshire Terrier needs. A quality dog vitamin will aid in maintaining a healthy dog and thereby increasing their quality of life and longevity.
